The atmosphere behind the goal had already gone flat. The moment the fifth went in, the home crowd just stopped singing entirely. When the joy of promotion turns into this at the start of the season, the heat drains out of the stadium fast. This is the kind of stretch where the crowd's energy shows up directly in the result.
I'll admit the finer points of European tactics aren't my area, but a first red card while still goalless and pointless is a fear I've seen echoed, on a different scale, in J.League promoted sides too. It's not something that shows up in the stats, but how a team spends the week before the next match really matters here.
To put it bluntly, this was a problem beyond tactics for Coventry. The sending-off in the 53rd minute broke their structure, and after that Brighton kept piling on until even their substitutes were scoring. Over the full 90, it showed exactly what a goalless, pointless side has been missing.
