CFMOTO's Ibex 950 and Yamaha's Ténéré 700 World Raid landed in North America the same week — $500 and four pounds apart. Our off-road and touring writers compare two bikes the numbers can't separate.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The CFMOTO Ibex 950 costs $12,499 with a 946cc parallel twin making 112 hp at 8,500 rpm and 77.5 lb-ft at 6,250 rpm. It runs a KYB 48mm inverted fork with nine inches of travel at both ends, weighs 489 lb wet, and has a 34.3-inch seat.
  • The Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid is $12,999, with split 23-liter aluminum tanks giving a claimed 310-mile range, 485 lb curb weight and a 35.0-inch seat. A six-axis IMU brings lean-sensitive brake control, three-mode traction control and three-mode slide control, with cruise control standard.
  • Separated by just $500 and four pounds, the two differentiate elsewhere: the Ibex loads up on equipment like an 8-inch TFT and heated seat, while the World Raid spends on range and suspension. Reviewers flagged the World Raid's 27-pound gain over the standard Ténéré and its seat comfort on long days.

Oda-san, did you see it? Two adventure bikes in the same class landed in North America this week. CFMOTO's Ibex 950 at $12,499, and Yamaha's Ténéré 700 World Raid at $12,999. That's a gap of five hundred bucks.

I saw. I ended up laying the spec sheets side by side before I even opened a map. What's fascinating is that they sit in the same price bracket and yet the people who built them clearly had completely different things in their heads.

The Ibex is a 946cc parallel twin, 112 hp at 8,500 rpm, 77.5 lb-ft at 6,250 rpm. KYB 48mm inverted fork, nine inches of travel front and rear — about 229mm. Spoked 21-inch front and 18-inch rear, on Pirelli Scorpion Rally STRs. To my eye that's a set of legs built for dirt, plain and simple.

And on top of those legs you get an 8-inch vertical TFT touchscreen, heated grips, a heated seat, cruise control, tire-pressure monitoring and a quickshifter — all standard. Honestly that's the part that surprised me more. Fully loaded, for $12,499.

That's exactly it. They're swinging with equipment. But wet weight is 489 pounds, over 220 kilos. Seat height is 34.3 inches, call it 870mm. Stack nine inches of travel at both ends and, well, that's what you get.

The World Raid is 485 pounds, so really almost identical. Seat height is 35.0 inches, 889mm — slightly taller, in fact. But the choices inside are different: it carries 23 liters of fuel split into aluminum tanks on either side.

Those split tanks look pure rally, I'll give them that. Putting the fuel low and to the sides centralizes the mass. The RevZilla first ride said that's what gives it a settled feel — that it instills "not just trust, but confidence." And that the steering damper proved invaluable in the dirt.

What caught my attention was that the same RevZilla writer said his backside was ready for a rest long before the fuel ran out. Claimed range is 310 miles, close to 500 kilometers. The distance you can ride and the distance you can keep riding are two different things.

Motorcycle.com said something similar. They scored it 90.5% overall, and still noted that the 27 pounds it gained over the standard Ténéré show up because it's the same CP2 engine. And that past 6,000 rpm the vibration starts coming through to your hands.

Needing a downshift to overtake at highway speed is actually a big deal from the touring side. On a trip where you do 500 kilometers a day two days running, that extra input accumulates into fatigue.

See, for me that part doesn't matter at all. Getting to the trailhead is just time you endure. The question is whether the suspension works once you're past it, and with nine inches at both ends plus a three-level slide control running off a six-axis IMU, that's a dirt tool as far as I'm concerned.
Yukuto Oda
Yukuto OdaTouring Editor
What's interesting is that the "dirt tool" and the "travel tool" have stopped separating on price or weight. 489 pounds against 485. $12,499 against $12,999. You can't choose on the numbers alone anymore.

So what do you choose on, then? My answer's simple. Whether you're riding on the assumption you'll drop it. Spoked wheels and hand guards as standard, and a price where tipping it over doesn't break your heart. That's it.

Mine gets decided after I've got off the bike. When I spread a map out in a mountain-pass parking lot, how many hours I could stand to spend on that seat is what sets the quality of the day's memory. Whether I can still think "so where do I ride next." Same five hundred dollars — you either spend it there, or you spend it on an 8-inch screen.

In the end neither of them is a "cheap adventure bike" — they're two different philosophies you can afford. And the best part is that they showed up in the same week.
